Dining with Pat – Cider Mills

A popular fall family outing is a visit to the cider mill.  There are several located within the suburban Detroit area. We visited two cider mills located in Oakland County which were reminiscent of a step back in time.

The Franklin Cider Mill, located north of the historic village of Franklin, established in 1837 as a grist mill, is a favorite destination for city dwellers and suburbanites as well.  In 1914 the first water-powered apple press was installed. Today, visitors can watch the cider being made. Some of the favorite treats in addition to the cider and donuts, include several varieties of apples, cheese, caramel and red candy apples. The mill boasts that the donuts are not in contact with any nut products.

Yates Cider Mill, in Rochester Hills, established in 1876, is a popular spot for old and young alike. The kids enjoy the petting zoo, open daily, and pony rides available on weekends. The River Walk as well as the Ice Cream and Fudge Shoppes are the favorites of the adults. They can watch the fudge-making process first hand. On Weekends in Sept. and Oct., knackwurst, hot dogs and cinnamon almonds are offered. There is also coffee, cider slush and hot spiced cider available. Yates uses the “Flash Pasteurization” cider process which kills the harmful bacteria. Yates is known for making a premium cider. As many as six different varieties of apples are blended to produce delicious, 100% natural cider.

Before leaving the cider mill, you will want to visit the Apple Tent where you can bag your own apples from bulk boxes of apples, straight from the orchard. When you buy the containers of cider to take home, you can also choose a wonderful apple crisp, apple pie or apple turnover. There is also a wonderful apple jam available.
